Day 26 Recap

So, that's it. We're in Luleå and the biking part of this trip is over.

After sleeping as long as we wanted, which ended up being for 11 hours, we rode the short way from the campground to our hotel in downtown Luleå and as luck would have it our room was ready and we could check in a few hours early.

The rest of the day was spent checking out the town, getting a couple of bike boxes (from, whom we'd contacted a few weeks back) as well as going to see "Cowboys and Aliens," which was decent, although it did have a few WTF moments story-wise.

All told, we rode 1933 km on this trip. I don't think we'll post to the blog again until we're back home, but there may be some Twitter updates and/or pictures uploaded.

Day 25 Recap

We're in Luleå, sort of. While it's true we're technically within the city limits, EFS Gården camping is at the very outskirts and it still feels like we're more or less in the middle of nowhere. It's about 10 km left into town proper.

We're actually here a day early, wbich is why we decided to stop a tiny bit short. The Luleå hostel was fully booked and the price of a tent spot in a campground is between one fifth and one tenth of what a hotel room would be, so... easy choice.

Anyway, the day was pretty uneventful. We got our earliest start yet as we left Piteå at 7:45. The weather was so-so, with gray skies all day and a bit of a chill in the air, but we had a tailwind for most of it and no rain, so it wasn't too bad.

We did about 73 kms today.

Day 24 Recap

We were promised clear skies by and were a bit dismayed to discover a dreary, gray morning when we awoke in Skellefteå this morning. Cold too.

Luckily that didn't last long, and by 9ish the sun was starting to poke through and before long it was the beautiful biking day we were longing for.

I'm not sure if it was the weather, the rest day or the expansive breakfast, but we zoomed right along until lunch time and by the time we were munching crisp bread on a large rock in the woods we had covered 53 km.

By a little after noon we were back on the bikes and covered the remaining 40 km to Piteå with equal gusto, although we did take a pit stop in Hemmingsmark for some water bottle refilling and ice cream munching.

At any rate, by 3:30 PM we rolled to a stop outside the hostel in Piteå (the campground was a ridiculous 12 km out of our way) and after checking in we wandered about town for a bit, had some dinner at a little hole-in-the-wall and noticed an awesome public pump in a park. The bike-friendlyness of this country continues to amaze us. There's a picture of the pump in the Flickr feed.

93 km today. Tomorrow could well be the last leg, as Luleå is a pretty comfortable day's ride from here, but that'd bring us there a day early so if we see some place we'd like to stay at along the way we might just make it a short day.

Day 23 Recap

Today started out slow for both of us. We didn't want to get out of bed in the morning, and we were dragging ourselves around packing - but once we hit the road we made pretty good time till about 11:30 when Kenneth broke a spoke so we had to stop and do a roadside repair. It went pretty smoothly now that we're getting to be experts at spoke repair and replacement, and were back on the road within about an hour after stopping for the spoke replacement.

After that we found a small picnic area with a sandy beach where we had our lunch. It was really picturesque but a bit chilly. The wind was at our backs all day which made us ride more quickly than usual. We arrived in Bureå earlier than we expected where we went to visit my friend Beverly. She had baked a delicious cake and we had a great time visiting and getting to know her family. Once we left Bureå, we followed the road to the next town which was Skellefteå and arrived at our hotel at about six o'clock having done a total of 80 km for the day, and a total of 1762 for the trip so far.

Only three more days of biking till we reach our final destination! It actually feels kind of weird to be so close to the end.
